Affinity

There are moments in life where you feel some type of connection with someone else. At times, it feels like you have known them for many years, as if your souls have danced together in a previous existence. The familiarity and comfort you experience can be both exhilarating and perplexing, leaving you to wonder how two souls could intertwine so seamlessly. Other times, it’s as if you have not stopped talking to them, even if silence has separated you both for what seems like an eternity; it’s that enchanting familiarity that makes every encounter feel like a homecoming, a return to a place where you truly belong, even if it is merely in their presence. Maybe it’s some type of soul tie that connects you to one another, a bond that transcends time and space, but these types of connections can sometimes interconnect souls in ways that defy explanation. Many will call them a soulmate, others will refer to them as acquaintances, and some may even label them as mistakes that were meant to teach valuable lessons about love and loss. The reality is that experiencing this profound connection with someone else is when you become most vulnerable to getting hurt, opening yourself up to the beautiful chaos of human emotion, like stepping into a wild sea with waves that may crash but also give rise to the most enchanting moments of joy. Having someone around who can feel you on a different level can evoke a deep sense of fear because not many get to experience that level of intimacy and understanding during their lifetimes. It takes an immense amount of courage to acknowledge that such genuine connection exists and to nurture it in the face of insecurity. Not many get to encounter a connection with someone that is so strong that it goes beyond any physical distance that may separate you; it can effortlessly bridge the gaps created by time and experience, reminding you that love knows no boundaries. It surpasses all those stages of grief, and no matter how much they can hurt you or how many obstacles may arise, you find yourself willingly willing to risk it all for the sake of this extraordinary bond, as if the universe itself orchestrated your meeting for divine reasons only understood by the heart. In my opinion, the risk is something that will always be worth it because having a soul type of connection with someone else is, in fact, quite exhilarating; it enriches your life in ways you never imagined possible. Knowing that someone has the potential to destroy you completely simply because of how deeply you love them gets your adrenaline rushing, creating a thrilling blend of joy and trepidation that can be addictively intoxicating. Life is about taking risks, and loving someone so deeply is probably one of the best risks you can take, because, let’s face it, life can feel lonesome when lived in isolation, leaving you yearning for meaningful interactions that ignite your spirit. Building a life together, despite all the odds and overcoming all the obstacles with someone else by your side, is not just worth it; it is transformative, as it shapes your character and expands your understanding of the world around you. Opening your soul to someone and declaring an enduring “affinity” with them is a courageous act, one that speaks volumes about the power of human connection, far outweighing the potential for heartbreak, creating a world of shared experiences and emotions that can last a lifetime. In the end, it is this connection that reminds us of our shared humanity, encouraging us to pursue love with passion, vulnerability, and an open heart, leaving behind the fear of the unknown.

Couple embracing on a rocky seaside cliff with glowing light trails

Through spring’s bloom, our love took flight,
New and tender, bathed in light.
In summer’s warmth, we grew so strong,
Days were endless, laughter long.

Autumn came, with colors deep,
Lessons learned, and memories to keep.
Winter’s chill, yet hand in hand,
Together we faced what life had planned.

With each season that drifts away, still one truth holds sway,
My soulmate, my heart, eternally, it’s you I must convey

The reality is that life will not always be this colorful. Many times we will have a different path than what is expected based on generational traditions. As we grow older, we differentiate based on what we have been through and our experiences with love and with our soulmates. For some, we lost, and we got back up, picking ourselves up from the depths of disappointment and heartbreak, while for others, we got hurt, patched our injuries, and continued living on with life, often carrying with us the scars that remind us of our resilience. We each have a specific story in our lives, woven from moments of joy and sorrow, and it doesn’t mean it’s bad or unworthy. Maybe we diverted from what our dreams had to be, and in doing so, we found new paths that led us to unexpected places filled with new opportunities, some of which we could not have anticipated or even considered in our wildest dreams. We had planned out our lives to perfection, envisioning a timeline that includes specific milestones, such as career achievements, family gatherings, and unforgettable vacations, but in the end, nothing came out as we had planned. Perhaps we even saw ourselves married and with children at a certain age, surrounded by a life we meticulously curated, filled with laughter and cherished memories, but things changed, and that is perfectly fine; change often paves the way for growth and helps us discover who we truly are beneath the layers of expectation. Living life the way it turns out is the best thing we can do, cherishing the beautiful chaos and spontaneity it brings, and not allowing anyone to dictate our future is also a vital step toward breaking free from the confines of preordained expectations. Despite what we believed our lives would be like at this given point in time, one thing is for sure: everything turned out exactly how it had to turn out, as if guided by an invisible hand that knows us better than we know ourselves. We lived and went through beautiful experiences with our soulmates, sharing laughter, joy, tears, and lessons that shaped who we are, and in those moments, we discovered profound insights that would serve as guideposts in our journeys. We loved so hard it hurt, experiencing a depth of connection that transcended superficiality, and through this, we learned the value of vulnerability and the strength it brings to our relationships. We lived life without holding back, savoring each moment, each encounter, making memories that will last a lifetime, and that’s the most beautiful thing we could have done; we have created a mosaic of experiences that could not be replicated. Life isn’t meant to be planned out or focused solely on achieving perfection; instead, it is an intricate turbine of experiences, growth, and learning, with threads of both triumphs and setbacks intricately woven together to create a fuller picture of our existence. Yet, despite life’s unpredictability, we still have the opportunity to make the best of it and live life with an open heart, embracing each day as a new chance to explore, learn, and grow, as we navigate through the highs and lows that come our way. It is in this acceptance that we find true freedom and contentment, allowing us to breathe deeply and appreciate every fleeting moment, knowing that every twist in our path has contributed to our unique narrative.

It’s Not Too Late to Love

If you do not have a soulmate or have experienced the art of affinity, you can always begin by loving yourself. Loving yourself involves recognizing your own value and worth without needing constant validation from others. It means having a positive view of yourself, appreciating your strengths and weaknesses, and accepting your imperfections while striving for growth. This journey of self-love requires you to explore your inner thoughts and emotions, providing you an opportunity to nurture a deeper connection with your true self. Engaging in activities that bring you joy and fulfillment can significantly enhance your sense of worth, as pursuing passions fosters a sense of identity and belonging. Additionally, it encourages setting healthy boundaries that protect your emotional space, allowing you to prioritize your needs and desires, which is essential for maintaining your mental health. Self-care rituals, whether they involve meditation, exercise, or simply pampering yourself, are important practices that reinforce this love and respect for yourself. Self-love is not about arrogance or selfishness; it is about treating yourself with the same care, respect, and compassion you would offer a loved one. It forms the foundation for self-confidence, resilience, and overall well-being, empowering you to navigate life’s challenges with a sense of grace and determination. By recognizing and embracing your own worth, you can cultivate a mindset that encourages positivity and self-acceptance. Cultivating this love for yourself can ultimately create a ripple effect, inspiring those around you to embrace their own worthiness and embark on their personal journeys of self-discovery and acceptance. As you flourish in this process, you may find that the quality of your relationships improves, as self-love often leads to healthier connections with others, enriching your life in ways you never imagined possible.
